March 9 & 10: TRANSforming Gender Conference with Hina Wong-Kalu & Meredith Talusan

The conference is dedicated to celebrating trans identities in all their forms and hosts workshops, panels, discussions and other conference sessions over two days. If you would like to see what sort of workshops we hold please take a look at last year’s program as there is a great deal of variety including sessions for trans people, family members, parents, educators, mental/medical health care professionals, and many more. The conference is FREE and open to the public so please take a moment to register.

This year’s keynote speakers are Hina Wong-Kalu and Meredith Talusan!

Hina Wong-Kalu is a fierce advocate for maintaining Hawai’ian culture and working with youth. Hina is the feature of the documentary film Kuma Hina. KUMU HINA is a powerful film about the struggle to maintain Pacific Islander culture and values within the Westernized society of modern day Hawaiʻi. It is told through the lens of an extraordinary Native Hawaiian who is both a proud and confident māhū, or transgender woman, and an honored and respected kumu, or teacher, cultural practitioner, and community leader.

Meredith Talusan, born in the Philippines, is an award-winning journalist and author who is also the Executive Editor for them. They have written features, essays, and opinion pieces for many publications, including The New York Times, The Guardian, The Atlantic, VICE, Matter, Backchannel, The Nation, and the American Prospect. She has contributed to several books including the New York Times Bestselling Not That Bad: Dispatches from Rape Culture edited by Roxane Gay. Her memoir, Fairest, is forthcoming from Viking / Penguin Random House.
